(Apologies for any cross-posting)
A full-time doctoral research position is open in co-supervision in the IIHM group (http://iihm.imag.fr) of LIG lab (https://www.liglab.fr), in Grenoble (France) and in the ESTIA-Recherche team (https://www.estia.fr/recherche), in Bidart (France). The fellowship is co-funded by Carnot LSI (https://carnot-lsi.com/) and ARTS (https://www.ic-arts.eu/) institutes for 36 months. The position will start before the end of 2022. Gross salary is approximately between 20K€ et 23K€ brut per year. The doctoral research will be co-advised by Céline Coutrix (http://iihm.imag.fr/coutrix/) and William Delamare (https://profils.estia.fr/w.delamare/)
* Scientific Context
The student is expected to integrate both the IIHM and the ESTIA-Recherche research groups (around 18 months each).
The IIHM group is concerned with the design, implementation, and evaluation of interaction techniques that are effective, usable, and enjoyable. The group is present in the main Human-Computer Interaction conferences: CHI, UIST, AVI, Interact, EICS, etc. It has long-lasting connections to other research groups in France and abroad, and is well connected to the industry. IIHM is part of the LIG lab, which is equipped with the latest machines for physical fabrication of prototypes.
ESTIA-Recherche mobilizes multiple disciplines to address the concept of intelligent and empowering interfaces for the engineering of complex systems. The multidisciplinary team focuses on scientific, technological, and societal themes to respond to cross-functional projects. ESTIA-Recherche hence studies and designs Human-Human, Human-System, and System-System interactions to contribute to energy and digital transitions and to the evolution towards the industry of the future.
* Research Plan
The PhD’s objective is to imagine novel ways to interact with augmented objects that best leverages users’ expertise with the existing objects in their environment. The Internet of Things (IoT) started to replace our traditional objects, both personal (e.g., smart home) and professional (e.g., smart office), with connected objects including augmented capabilities. Users are already able to use voice or direct touch to interact with these objects. Yet, users already developed extensive expertise with their traditional objects’ current physical interfaces. The PhD student will explore how users’ expertise can transfer from the UI of traditional objects to novel remote UIs (deformable tangible interaction, or mid-air inputs for instance).
* Candidate
We seek candidates with profound interest in Human-Computer Interaction, strong motivation, and creativity. A successful candidate:
- Has a strong master’s degree in computer science or another area related to Human-Computer Interaction,
- Has excellent written and oral communication skills,
- Has excellent software and/or hardware skills.
Curiosity toward cognitive sciences, statistics, and fabrication are not mandatory, but are a plus.

Applicants should submit (1) a full CV, (2) copies of their university degree and/or study transcripts, (3) name and contact information of at least one reference, and (4) a brief description of their research interests. Please send your application via e-mail to Céline Coutrix and William Delamare: celine.coutrix(a)cnrs.fr, w.delamare(a)estia.fr.
If you have any further questions, please contact Céline Coutrix and William Delamare: celine.coutrix(a)cnrs.fr, w.delamare(a)estia.fr
Virtual and in-person co-design workshops: from alternative to complementary approaches.
https://virtual-physical-codesign.webflow.io
June 20th, 2022
Venice, Italy
Workshop co-located with ACM Creativity&Cognition 2022 https://cc.acm.org/2022/
OVERVIEW
The pandemic has forced us to re-think the ways we design and facilitate co-design. Activities once relying on in-person interaction, often mediated by physical artifacts (e.g. brainstorming cards, postITs, playing tokens), had to be quickly redesigned as virtual experiences – often with trade-offs involved. Can in-person and virtual workshops co-exist and complement each other?
We invite a diverse pool of participants, including technologists, educators, psychologists, and sociologists to share their experiences and reflect on how to bring together virtual and in-person co-design workshops. Through discussion and hands-on sessions with physical, digital, and hybrid co-design toolkits created by the organizers we aim to reflect on the following research questions:
• What are the challenges of transforming location, methods, and toolkits that are designed for in-person workshops into the digital?
• How the diverse affordances available in the physical and digital realms impact on the ability of co-design tools and methods to foster participants’ creativity, collaboration and learning skills.
• How does the virtual space influence the interaction between participants, e.g. virtual breakout rooms vs. different tables or corners in a real workshop room?
• How do workshop facilitators can to adapt to virtual and hybrid settings?
DATES
• Research statement submission May 12st (extended)
• Notification of acceptance May 15th
• C&C Early Registration May 20th
• Workshop June 20th

CONTRIBUTIONS
Participants shall submit a 1-page research statement with a summary of their experience in the field and topics they would like to discuss during the workshop. Participants are also invited to bring and demo their own toolkits (contact us). We also encourage young researchers with little experience to participate.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Physical, digital and hybrid co-design workshop methods and toolkits
• Evaluation of co-design methods and tools
• Experience facilitating co-design workshops in formal and informal settings
• The use of co-design workshops in education
Please email your research statement to virtual-physical-codesign(a)mit.edu

MIS4TEL 2022 -- 12th International Conference on Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning
>>> SCOPE
Education is the cornerstone of any society and it serves as one of the foundations for many of its social values and characteristics. State-of-the-art and novel methodologies and technologies allow researchers, designers, and domain experts to pursue Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) solutions targeting not only cognitive processes but also motivational, personality, or emotional factors. Nowadays, we can identify two main legs, providing necessary and complementary strengths to a TEL-oriented design process: appropriate technologies should be applied, and appropriate methods should guide the design of such application. Technologies in TEL are capable of delivering smart, personalized, tailored, and motivating learning solutions. Methods are coming from different fields, such as education, psychology, medicine, computer science, and from diverse communities, where collaboration and co-working are used, such as maker communities and participatory design communities. In addition, Learning Analytics can help manage available (big) data and augment learning opportunities for learners and educators alike, for instance by supporting self-regulated learning or adaptation of the learning material.
As to these topics, the annual appointment of MIS4TEL established itself as a consolidated fertile forum where scholars and professionals from the international community, with a broad range of expertise in the TEL field, share results and compare experiences. The 12th edition of the conference calls for novel research in TEL and expands the topics of the previous editions, highlighting the role of the most recent methods and technological opportunities. CALL FOR PAPERS:
----------------------------
Recommendations are ubiquitous in many contexts and domains due to a continuously growing adoption of decision-support systems. Explanations may be provided along with recommendations with the reasoning behind suggesting a particular item. However, explanations may also significantly affect a user's decision-making process by serving a number of different goals, such as transparency, persuasiveness, scrutability, among others. While there is a growing body of research studying the effect of explanations, the relationship between their quality and their effect has not been investigated in depth yet.
For instance, at an institutional level, organisational values may require a different combination of explanation goals; also, within the same organisation some combinations of goals may be more appropriate for some use cases and less for others. Conversely, end-users of a recommender system may be bearers of different values, and explanations can affect them differently. Therefore, understanding whether explanations are fit for their intended goals is key to subsequently implementing them in a production stage.
Furthermore, the lack of established, actionable methodologies to evaluate explanations for recommendations, as well as evaluation datasets, hinders cross-comparison between different explainable recommendations approaches, and is one of the issues hampering widespread adoption of explanations in industry settings.
This workshop aims to extend existing work in the field by bringing together and facilitating the exchange of perspectives and solutions from industry and academia, and aims to bridge the gap between academic design guidelines and the best practices in the industry regarding the implementation and evaluation of explanations in recommender systems, with respect to their goals, impact, potential biases, and informativeness. With this workshop, we provide a platform for discussion among scholars, practitioners, and other interested parties.
TOPICS AND THEMES:
--------------------------------
The motivation of the workshop is to promote discussion upon future research and practice directions of evaluating explainable recommendations, by bringing together academic and industry researchers and practitioners in the area. We focus in particular on real-world use cases, diverse organisational values and purposes, and different target users. We encourage submissions that study different explanation goals and combinations of those, how they fit various organisation values and different use cases. Furthermore, we welcome submissions that propose and make available for the community high-quality datasets and benchmarks.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
* Evaluation
* Relevance of explanation goals for different use cases;
* Soliciting user feedback on explanations;
* Implicit vs. explicit evaluation of explanations and goals;
* Reproducible and replicable evaluation methodologies;
* Online vs. offline evaluations.
* Personalisation
* User-modelling for explanation generation;
* Evaluation approaches for personalised explanations (e.g., content, style);
* Evaluation approaches for context-aware explanations (e.g., place, time, alone/group setting, exploratory/transaction mode).
* Presentation
* Evaluation of different explanation modalities (e.g., text, graphics, audio, hybrid);
* Evaluation of interactive explanations.
* Datasets
* Generation of datasets for evaluation of explanations;
* Evaluation benchmarks.
* Values
* Evaluation of explanations in relation to organisational values;
* Evaluation of explanations in relation to personal values.
SUBMISSIONS:
----------------------
We welcome three types of submissions:
* position or perspective papers (up to 4 pages in length, plus unlimited pages for references): original ideas, perspectives, research vision, and open challenges in the area of evaluation approaches for explainable recommender systems;
* featured papers (title and abstract of the paper, plus the original paper): already published papers or papers summarizing existing publications in leading conferences and high-impact journals that are relevant for the topic of the workshop
* demonstration papers (up to 2 pages in length, plus unlimited pages for references): original or already published prototypes and operational evaluation approaches in the area of explainable recommender systems.
Page limits include diagrams and appendices. Submissions should be single-blind, written in English, and formatted according to the current ACM two-column conference format. Suitable LaTeX, Word, and Overleaf<https://www.overleaf.com/gallery/tagged/acm-official> templates are available from the ACM Website<https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template> (use “sigconf” proceedings template for LaTeX and the Interim Template for Word).
Submit papers electronically via EasyChair: https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=quare22.
All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the program committee and accepted papers will be published on the website of our workshop: https://sites.google.com/view/quare-2022/home.

MIS4TEL 2022 -- 12th International Conference on Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning
>>> SCOPE
As in the tradition of MIS4TEL, this edition aims at offering the different perspectives, and complementary voices, coming from the multidisciplinary field of TEL.
