These mobile intelligent applications are poised to revolutionise various facets of daily life, encompassing domains such as transportation, e-commerce, healthcare, smart homes, smart cities, social interaction, and more. Mobile intelligence serves as an inclusive platform for both academic and industrial researchers to share their latest research insights, experimental findings, and the latest advancements in industry technologies related to mobile systems, machine learning, edge and cloud computing, services, and engineering. Leveraging the synergy of mobile communications, machine intelligence, edge computing, and edge/cloud infrastructures, the future of Mobile Intelligence Systems is envisioned to provide a multitude of critical and personalised services across diverse application domains, ranging from education, transportation, to public health, safety, and security. The eXtended Reality (XR) term encloses all those immersive technologies that can shift the boundaries between digital and physical worlds to realize the metaverse. According to tech companies and venture capitalists, the metaverse will be a super-platform that convenes sub-platforms: social media, online video games, and ease-of-life apps, all accessible through the same digital space and sharing the same digital economy. Inside the metaverse, virtual worlds will allow avatars to carry out all human endeavours, including creation, display, entertainment, social, and trading. Thus, the metaverse will evolve how users interact with brands, intellectual properties, health services, cultural heritage, and each other things on the Internet. A user could join friends to play a multiplayer game, watch a movie via a streaming service and then attend a university course precisely the same as in the real world. The metaverse development will require new software architecture that will enable decentralized and collaborative virtual worlds. These self-organized virtual worlds will be permanent and will require maintenance operations. In addition, it will be necessary to design an efficient data management system and prevent privacy violations. Finally, the convergence of physical reality, virtually enhanced, and an always-on virtual space highlighted the need to rethink the actual paradigms for visualization, interaction, and sharing of digital information, moving toward more natural, intuitive, dynamically customizable, multimodal, and multi-user solutions. This special session aims to focus on exploring how the realization of the metaverse can transform certain application domains such us: (i) healthcare, in which the metaverse solutions can, for instance, improve the communication between patients and physicians; (ii) cultural heritage, with potentially more effective solutions for tourism guidance, site maintenance, and heritage object conservation; and (iii) industry, where to enable data-driven decision making, smart maintenance, and overall asset optimisation. Since 1995, the NLDB conference brings together researchers, industry practitioners, and potential users interested in various applications of Natural Language in the Database and Information Systems field. The term "Information Systems" has to be considered in the broader sense of Information and Communication Systems, including Big Data, Linked Data and Social Networks. The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has itself recently experienced several exciting developments. In research, these developments have been reflected in the emergence of Large Language Models and the importance of aspects such as transparency, bias and fairness, Large Multimodal Models and the connection of the NLP field with Computer Vision, chatbots and dialogue-based pipelines. Regarding applications, NLP systems have evolved to the point that they now offer real-life, tangible benefits to enterprises. Many of these NLP systems are now considered a de-facto offering in business intelligence suites, such as algorithms for recommender systems and opinion mining/sentiment analysis. Language models developed by the open-source community have become widespread and commonly used. Businesses are now readily adopting these technologies, thanks to the efforts of the open-source community. For example, fine-tuning a language model on a company's own dataset is now easy and convenient, using modules created by thousands of academic researchers and industry experts. It is against this backdrop of recent innovations in NLP and its applications in information systems that the 29th edition of the NLDB conference takes place. We welcome research and industrial contributions, describing novel, previously unpublished works on NLP and its applications across a plethora of topics as described in the Call for Papers. Call for Papers: NLDB 2024 invites authors to submit papers on unpublished research that addresses theoretical aspects, algorithms, applications, architectures for applied and integrated NLP, resources for applied NLP, and other aspects of NLP, as well as survey and discussion papers. This year's edition of NLDB continues with the Industry Track to foster fruitful interaction between the industry and the research community. The ACM UMAP 2024 Doctoral Consortium (DC) will take place as part of the conference. The DC provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of distinguished researchers and industry practitioners from the field. Doctoral students are invited to apply for presenting their research to experienced scholars who will provide constructive feedback and advice. Students should consider participating in the DC if they are at least one year away from completing their dissertation at the time of the event, but after having settled on a research area or dissertation topic. The eXtended Reality (XR) term encloses all those immersive technologies that can shift the boundaries between digital and physical worlds to realize the metaverse. According to tech companies and venture capitalists, the metaverse will be a super-platform that convenes sub-platforms: social media, online video games, and ease-of-life apps, all accessible through the same digital space and sharing the same digital economy. Inside the metaverse, virtual worlds will allow avatars to carry out all human endeavours, including creation, display, entertainment, social, and trading. Thus, the metaverse will evolve how users interact with brands, intellectual properties, health services, cultural heritage, and each other things on the Internet. A user could join friends to play a multiplayer game, watch a movie via a streaming service and then attend a university course precisely the same as in the real world. The metaverse development will require new software architecture that will enable decentralized and collaborative virtual worlds. These self-organized virtual worlds will be permanent and will require maintenance operations. In addition, it will be necessary to design an efficient data management system and prevent privacy violations. Finally, the convergence of physical reality, virtually enhanced, and an always-on virtual space highlighted the need to rethink the actual paradigms for visualization, interaction, and sharing of digital information, moving toward more natural, intuitive, dynamically customizable, multimodal, and multi-user solutions. This special session aims to focus on exploring how the realization of the metaverse can transform certain application domains such us: (i) healthcare, in which the metaverse solutions can, for instance, improve the communication between patients and physicians; (ii) cultural heritage, with potentially more effective solutions for tourism guidance, site maintenance, and heritage object conservation; and (iii) industry, where to enable data-driven decision making, smart maintenance, and overall asset optimisation. The guiding theme of this edition is Sustainable Software Reuse. We now invite submissions for Late-Breaking Results (LBR) and Journal First. LATE-BREAKING RESULTS LBR submissions will be peer reviewed and the accepted ones will be included in the conference proceedings volume to be published by Springer in the LNCS series. An LBR submission may also contain innovative ideas that are being explored and have already shown some promising results.
