One PhD and two Industrial PhD fully-funded positions are available at
the Creative,
Intelligent & Multisensory Interactions Laboratory
<https://www.cimil.disi.unitn.it/> of the Department of Information
Engineering and Computer Science of University of Trento:
https://www.cimil.disi.unitn.it/openings/
To apply to the PhD calls it is necessary to have achieved a master degree
by the end of October 2022 as well as to possess demonstrated English
skills (e.g., via a master degree in English or via certificates such as
TOEFL). All positions will start in November 2022 (or shortly after upon
request).
More PhD positions are planned to open in the near future.
*1) PhD in "Connecting online musicians and audiences to reduce travels and
pollution"*
The PhD will focus on the creation of musical interactions in shared
augmented/virtual environments, for performance settings. Related topics
that may be investigated include music emotion recognition, binaural audio,
virtual acoustics and 5G networking.
Required skills:
- M.Sc. degree in computer science, electronics, mathematics, physics,
telecommunications or related fields
- programming
- sufficient music knowledge (e.g., proven experience in playing a
musical instrument)
- excellent English skills (read, written, and spoken)
- strong self-motivation and independence
Desirable but not strictly necessary skills:
- XR frameworks (unity 3D, unreal, etc.)
- human-computer interaction
- audio digital signal processing
- spatial audio
- machine learning
- networking
- affective computing
- music information retrieval
- 5G slicing
Deadline: 5th of August
Main place of work: Trento (Italy). An abroad period at a company or
academic institution is mandatory.

The position is sponsored by the new National PhD in Sustainable
Development and Climate change. Further information about the National PhD
in Sustainable Development and Climate change can be found here:

*2) Industrial PhD **"Design of a 5G slice for networked music
performances" **at company Athonet *
The PhD will focus on the design, simulation, and evaluation of a 5G slice
for networked music performances in the context of both private and public
5G networks. As mobile networks are developing towards the support of new
and augmented ways of interaction (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality), the
corresponding requirements become more and more strict on the
communications latency. Indeed, 5G is expected to represent a milestone in
such a direction, enabling sub-10ms and 1ms access delay for applications
involving human perception or robotic control. Such 5G setup will be
implemented in the form of a network slice dedicated to the specific subset
of applications requiring very low latency. However, no works in the
literature specify the nature and setup of such a network slice.
Required skills:
- M.Sc. degree in telecommunications, computer science, electronics,
mathematics, physics, or related fields
- networking
- programming
- excellent English skills (read, written, and spoken)
- strong self-motivation and independence
Deadline: 23rd of August.
Main places of work: Vicenza (Italy), Trento (Italy) and Stockholm (Sweden)
The PhD will be supervised by the team members of Athonet (
https://www.athonet.com/) as well as by researchers of the Creative,
Intelligent & Multisensory Interactions Laboratory of University of Trento

*3) **Industrial PhD** "Networked music performance system for high numbers
of musicians" **at company Maestranze Artistiche*
The PhD will focus on the creation of a networked music performance system
capable of supporting the collaborative music making of large numbers of
musicians.
Required skills:
- M.Sc. degree in computer science, electronics, mathematics, physics,
or related fields
- Programming
- sufficient music knowledge (e.g., proven experience in playing a
musical instrument)
- excellent English skills (read, written, and spoken)
- strong self-motivation and independence
Desirable but not strictly necessary skills:
- knowledge of the JUCE framework
- Web Audio,
- Node.js
Deadline: 23rd of August.
Main place of work: Trento (Italy) and Stockholm (Sweden).
