The goal of workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Potential workshop topics should be related to the general theme of the conference (“Where HCI meets AI”). Tutorials are designed to provide fundamental knowledge and experience on topics related to intelligent user interfaces, and the intersection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Note: We encourage you to contact the chairs with your ideas (workshops2025(a)iui.acm.org), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshop and tutorial formats and activities, including but not limited to: * "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. * Interactive formats to explore a certain topic during the workshop (e.g., through breakout rooms); such workshops may have their own paper submission and review process or target a report summarizing the outcome of the interactive discussions. * "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter review process (e.g. based on abstracts only). * "Hands-on" workshopsaround a specific problem or topic that may wish to ask participants to submit a position statement. * "Project centric" workshopsthat may be closely related to the scope of an existing large-scale (e.g. NSF, EU, etc. funded) project. * "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hackathons around selected topics with individual or team participation. * Tutorials on a specific topic relevant to IUI; for example, methods and approaches in HCI and/or AI, specific techniques or algorithms to develop intelligent user interfaces, etc. We invite submissions of proposals for full-day and half-day workshops or tutorials. Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the workshop and tutorial chairs. Workshops with few submissions may be cancelled, shortened, merged with other workshops, or otherwise restructured. The organizers of accepted workshops and tutorials are responsible for producing a call for participation and publicizing it, such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the IUI conference community. Workshop and tutorial organizers will maintain their own website with information about the workshop or tutorial and the ACM IUI 2025 website will refer to this website. The workshop organizers will coordinate the paper solicitation, collection, and review process. Workshops’ and tutorials’ summary will be included in the ACM Digital Library for ACM IUI 2025, and we will separately publish a joint workshop proceedings for accepted workshop submissions (through CEUR or similar). Un caro saluto, Maristella ---------------------------------- Interaction Substitution for Mobile Games Accessibility and Exergaming Mobile device interaction is based on touchscreen usage, which poses significant accessibility barriers to people with upper extremity motor impairments. Existing solutions, provided as software services, enable access to most mobile device functionalities by substituting the default touchscreen interaction paradigm with simpler alternatives. This is commonly achieved by replacing direct touchscreen access to interface elements with their sequential traversal, until a target element is reached. However, sequential access is slower, and therefore not suited for apps having time-constrained interaction requirements, such as games. Furthermore, since common game development kits do not advertise their interface elements to the mobile operating system, in many cases alternative interaction paradigms cannot be used at all. To address these issues, we research novel interaction substitution approaches that rely on the direct mapping of alternative triggering actions to touchscreen interaction events, which are previously annotated on the interface of a target game. The proposed approach can be used as an accessibility layer to make existing and popular games accessible without directly intervening on their code. Within this framework, we explore the design space of the alternative triggering actions, proposing four input modalities that can be personalized to the specific user needs. Through a series of studies with representative users, we assess the accuracy, time overhead, workload and appreciation of the proposed alternative inputs, compared to non-mediated touchscreen access by people without disabilities. Finally, we explore the applicability of the approach to telerehabilitation by transforming existing mobile games into full-fledged exergames. Dragan Ahmetovic is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Milan. His research focuses on assistive technologies designed to augment the cognitive capabilities of users and overcome barriers that limit their access to information and physical world. He investigates embodied sensing, knowledge retrieval, intelligent user interfaces and human-computer interaction, mediated by mobile and pervasive devices. Dragan conducted his doctoral studies at EveryWare Lab of the University of Milan and received his Ph.D. in March 2015. Afterwards, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow and project scientist at the Cognitive Assistance Lab of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA and as a postdoctoral researcher at the “S. Polin” Laboratory for Research and Experimentation with Novel Assistive Technologies for STEM at the University of Turin, Italy.

We are looking for candidates for one three-year PhD scholarship that will be carried out at the at the Human Interfaces in Information Systems (HIIS) Laboratory at CNR-ISTI The fellowship is associated with the PhD school at the Computer Science department of the University of Pisa in the area of Human Control in Daily Environment Automations for Sustainability. The specific PhD topic will be defined taking into account the background and the interests of the candidate. The HIIS Laboratory is a creative and multi-disciplinary interactive technologies research laboratory, with deep and extensive research collaborations, at national and international level, industrial partners, and a supportive and inclusive working environment. Pisa is a lively small town located in Tuscany, near the coast, characterised by the presence of a rich research ecosystem (three Universities and many research centres) very active in the ICT area. Cari Tutti e care Tutte, Faccio seguito al mio messaggio di circa un anno fa per invitare nuovamente chi di voi non l'avesse già fatto a rinnovare la propria *iscrizione ad ACM SIGCHI*. E' davvero importante dare massima visibilità a livello internazionale a una comunità scientifica attiva e dinamica come la nostra. Per questo motivo vi esorto *fare iscrivere anche tutti i nostri studenti di dottorato*, che pagano una quota simbolica e che rappresentano il futuro dell'HCI italiana. Un modo per farli sentire parte attiva di questa comunità sin da subito. CALL FOR PAPERS Experience 2.0 and Beyond – Engineering Cross Devices and Multiple Realities http://hciv.de/xp2/ June 25, 2024, Cagliari, Italy In conjunction with The 16th ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems (EICS 2024) Augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) are found very promising. Even handheld displays, including smartphones and tablets, can provide a wide and low budget access to AR/MR. However, current research and applications in this area faces many challenges (e.g., suitable interaction techniques, better experience, navigation in MR environments, high cross-device UX) which limit the application in real-world activities. Targeting these challenges, our workshop will provide a platform for researchers, developers, and professionals from academia, industry, and arts, to discuss issues and define novel interaction paradigms, user interfaces, 3D visualizations, and application for cross-device AR/MR. Workshop Topics The workshop will be dedicated to observations, concepts, approaches, techniques, development, and practice that allow understanding, facilitating, and increasing the advancements of AR/MR applications. This includes discussions on new applications, challenges, and practical solutions for existing systems or scenarios. **Goals:** Our aim with the 6th HealthRecSys is to reignite these conversations and provide a forward-thinking platform that revisits the foundational elements that have contributed to the field's growth. However, the workshop aspires to do more by infusing new perspectives and tackling the most pressing global challenges and technological innovations head-on. The workshop will explore contemporary themes such as the impact of global health crises on recommender systems, the integration of Large Language Models and other generative AI models in health applications, the increasing emphasis on personalized and self-managed care, and the increasing focus on health equity leading to consideration of literacy, accessibility, and monetary means when building health recommender systems. These topics not only reflect the current state of the world but also align with the broader shifts towards ethical AI, and the need for systems that can adapt to and address individual health and care needs. Furthermore, HealthRecSys is dedicated to strengthening the network of researchers working on health recommender systems, drawing participants from an array of health and care domains. This effort is aimed at cultivating a cross-disciplinary community that promotes collaboration among recommender systems specialists, healthcare professionals, ethicists, and policymakers, among others. To enhance cross-sector collaboration, the 6th HealthRecSys workshop will encourage joint projects and funding prospects, in addition to promoting the sharing of resources, datasets, and tools among scholars and industry practitioners. **Topics:** The workshop is calling for submissions on a wide array of topics within health recommender systems. Participants can decide between a research-focused submission and a project-focused submission. Submission category research: innovative research ideas, preliminary findings, or system prototypes that contribute new knowledge to the field Submission category project: presentations on funded research initiatives, collaborations between industry and academia, or partnerships between healthcare entities and research institutions. Submission guidelines: ====================== All submitted papers must: - be written in English; - contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; - be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings Template -double-column format, with a font size no smaller than 9pt; - be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size; Submissions are encouraged to include links or demos as attachments to enhance their presentation. All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process to ensure quality and originality. The objective of the III.Lab is to develop fundamentally new interaction approaches in the context of challenging contextual conditions ("Challenging Contexts"). Special topics of the III. Lab are Intelligent Interaction Artifacts and Environments, Human-Centered Automation ("Human in the Loop"), Next Generation Human Centered Design Methods and Tools, Societal Interfaces and Hybrid Futures. The duties of the position include teaching (courses on Human-Computer Interaction) and supervising theses and dissertations. Abstract and Topics Following the successful series of PATCH workshops, PATCH 2024 will be again the meeting point between state-of-the-art cultural heritage research and personalization – using any kind of technology, while focusing on ubiquitous and adaptive scenarios, to enhance the personal experience in cultural heritage sites. The workshop is aimed at bringing together, physically and/or virtually, researchers and practitioners who are working on various aspects of cultural heritage and are interested in exploring the potential of state of the art mobile technology (onsite as well as online) to enhance the CH visit experience. The expected result of the workshop is a sharing and discussing novel ideas and creating a multidisciplinary research agenda that will inform future research directions and hopefully, forge some research collaborations. Motivation Cultural heritage (CH) has traditionally been a privileged area for personalization research, as highlighted by the many H2020 calls on this topic. Visitors come to cultural heritage sites willing to experience and learn new things, usually without a clear idea of what to expect. CH sites are typically rich in objects and information; much more than the visitor can absorb during the limited time of a visit. Cultural Heritage exploration and fruition are central aspects to value the richness of the territory and the history of our countries. The research on this topic is very active and continuously expanding towards new topics, such as the integration of cultural and natural heritage exploration, the extension to novel interaction means (e.g., haptic user interfaces and IoT), ambient intelligence, etc. We invite cultural heritage professionals and researchers to join us to discuss findings and trends on personalisation of cultural heritage in the broadest sense, from online and remote cultural access to onsite visit, from individuals to groups, from tangible to virtual and robotic mediation. Multimodal AI encompasses technical challenges in machine learning and computational modeling such as representations, fusion, data, and systems. The study of social interactions encompasses both human-human interactions and human-computer interactions. A unique aspect of ICMI is its multidisciplinary nature which values both scientific discoveries and technical modelling achievements, with an eye towards impactful applications for the good of people and society. Novelty will be assessed along two dimensions: scientific novelty and technical novelty. Accepted papers at ICMI 2024 will need to be novel along one of the two dimensions: * Scientific Novelty: Papers should bring new scientific knowledge about human social interactions, including human-computer interactions. For example, discovering new behavioral markers that are predictive of mental health or how new behavioral patterns relate to children’s interactions during learning. It is the responsibility of the authors to perform a proper literature review and clearly discuss the novelty in the scientific discoveries made in their paper. * Technical Novelty: Papers should propose novelty in their computational approach for recognizing, generating or modeling multimodal data. Examples include: novelty in the learning and prediction algorithms, in the neural architecture, or in the data representation. Novelty can also be associated with new usages of an existing approach. Commitment to ethical conduct is required and submissions must adhere to ethical standards in particular when human-derived data are employed. Authors are encouraged to read the ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (https://ethics.acm.org/). ICMI 2024 conference theme: The theme of this year’s ICMI conference revolves around “Equitability and environmental sustainability in multimodal interaction technologies.” The focus is on exploring how multimodal systems and multimodal interactive applications can serve as tools to bridge the digital divide, particularly in underserved communities and countries, with a specific emphasis on those in Latin America and the Caribbean. The conference aims to delve into the design principles that can render multimodal systems more equitable and sustainable in applications such as health and education, thereby catalyzing positive transformations in development for historically marginalized groups, including racial/ethnic minorities and indigenous peoples. Moreover, there is a crucial exploration of the intersection between multimodal interaction technologies and environmental sustainability. This involves examining how these technologies can be crafted to comprehend, disseminate, and mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change, especially in the Latin America and Caribbean region. The conference endeavors to explore the potential of multimodal systems in fostering community resilience, raising awareness, and facilitating education related to climate change, thereby contributing to a holistic approach that encompasses both social and environmental dimensions. Carissimi, come avrete avuto modo di apprendere dai messaggi circolati nei mesi scorsi, Giuliana Vitiello e io abbiamo partecipato all’istituzione del Mediterranean CHI (MedCHI), un nuovo comitato dell’ACM SIGCHI dedicato a promuovere e rafforzare l'HCI nell’area del Mediterraneo. In occasione della conferenza womENcourage, che si terrà a Madrid dal 26 al 28 Giugno (https://womencourage.acm.org/2024/), MedCHI organizzerà un workshop volto a esplorare l'impatto della ricerca HCI sulla valorizzazione della cultura e delle comunità del Mediterraneo, con un focus specifico su inclusività e parità di genere. In particular, submissions on topics of emerging interest in the research and development communities are encouraged. Authors can choose to submit their papers under either the Research and Vision or Industry and Experience Track. Novelty is a key criterion in the review process. * Vision papers describe speculative but well-reasoned and inspiring papers. Here, the insights and clarity of the vision are of key concern. * Industry and experience papers describe how existing research has been transferred into practice. The review focus is on the lessons learned, including those relevant for researchers. Research and vision papers should be submitted to the Research Track, industry and experience papers to the Industry Track.
