Faccio seguito al mio messaggio di circa un anno fa per invitare nuovamente
chi di voi non l'avesse già fatto a rinnovare la propria *iscrizione ad ACM
SIGCHI*.
E' davvero importante dare massima visibilità a livello internazionale a
una comunità scientifica attiva e dinamica come la nostra. Per questo
motivo vi esorto *fare iscrivere anche tutti i nostri studenti di dottorato*,
che pagano una quota simbolica e che rappresentano il futuro dell'HCI
italiana. Un modo per farli sentire parte attiva di questa comunità sin da
subito.
Quest'anno questo mio appello è particolarmente sentito, perché siamo
prossimi alle elezioni del *SIGCHI 2024 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE*, che si
apriranno ad Aprile e termineranno a Maggio/Giugno 2024 e che vedono la
candidatura dell'attuale *Presidente Neha Kumar e di Luigi De Russis, in
qualità di Executive Vice President* (i due nominativi “running as a team”,
vanno votati insieme).
Penso sia superfluo sottolineare l'importanza del ruolo di Executive VIce
President affidato a un membro della nostra comunità, che negli anni scorsi
ha dato grande prova di sensibilità verso le iniziative portate avanti dai
nostri gruppi di ricerca, suggerendo di volta in volta strategie e
strumenti che SIGCHI mette a disposizione per favorirne il successo. E'
anche per questo motivo che vi chiedo di massimizzare gli sforzi e,
cogliendo tutti i benefit della membership cui ho accennato, *votare Neha
Kumar e Luigi De Russis*.

Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and meta-design
challenge the understanding of the concept of “end user”.
The 8th edition of this workshop aims to critically differentiate,
dissect, and deepen the roles, experiences, and demands of end users by
inviting contributions from different perspectives.
The workshop invites contributions to explore the following fundamental
issues:
- Re-conceptualizing the multi-faceted roles that end users can play.
- Investigating how end users are evolving into active participants in
the design and development through frameworks (such as meta-design) that
encourage creation, modification, and evolution in individual and group
activities.
- Understanding the skills and literacies (e.g., computational fluency)
that end users need to acquire to be successful contributors (e.g.,
education, after-school clubs, etc.).
- Envisioning future scenarios and possibilities for end user roles and
experiences in the context of emerging technologies and cultural changes.
- Understanding the design trade-offs associated with balancing the
potential value of end-user contributions with the necessary effort to
ensure that end users will be motivated to contribute over long periods
of time.
Participants from academia, industry, and user communities are invited
to share their ideas, insights, and experiences to increase our
collective understanding and approach towards end users in the digital age.
Topics of discussion may include (but will not be limited to):
- Analysis of the use and historical development of the concept of “end
user”
- Can meta-design frameworks facilitate and empower end users in
becoming designers, shaping and adapting systems to their needs?
- What are the major responsibilities for end users in "end-user
development” and/versus "end-user software engineering"?
- If computational fluency is widely achieved by humans in the digital
age — how will this change the concept of "end user" and “learning with
digital tools”?
- How can the division between professional developers and end users be
designed and supported as collaborative interactions rather than a rigid
separation?
- How do we scale up user participation from individuals to groups to
communities?
- In which contexts are end users the drivers of the innovation?
- Which other frameworks and environments in AI exist in addition to
Large Language Models (LLMs) for supporting end users?
- How does the role of end users change in the era of LLMs?
- Which additional learning demands occur that empower end users to
assess LLM possibilities and limits?
- Success stories and failures (e.g., empirical studies) involving or
analyzing end users as active participants in sociotechnical systems in
different domains (education, workplace, at home, leisure, etc.).

Abstract and Topics
Following the successful series of PATCH workshops, PATCH 2024 will be
again the meeting point between state-of-the-art cultural heritage research
and personalization – using any kind of technology, while focusing on
ubiquitous and adaptive scenarios, to enhance the personal experience in
cultural heritage sites. The workshop is aimed at bringing together,
physically and/or virtually, researchers and practitioners who are working
on various aspects of cultural heritage and are interested in exploring the
potential of state of the art mobile technology (onsite as well as online)
to enhance the CH visit experience. The expected result of the workshop is
a sharing and discussing novel ideas and creating a multidisciplinary
research agenda that will inform future research directions and hopefully,
forge some research collaborations.
Motivation
Cultural heritage (CH) has traditionally been a privileged area for
personalization research, as highlighted by the many H2020 calls on this
topic. Visitors come to cultural heritage sites willing to experience and
learn new things, usually without a clear idea of what to expect. CH sites
are typically rich in objects and information; much more than the visitor
can absorb during the limited time of a visit. Cultural Heritage
exploration and fruition are central aspects to value the richness of the
territory and the history of our countries. The research on this topic is
very active and continuously expanding towards new topics, such as the
integration of cultural and natural heritage exploration, the extension to
novel interaction means (e.g., haptic user interfaces and IoT), ambient
intelligence, etc.
We invite cultural heritage professionals and researchers to join us to
discuss findings and trends on personalisation of cultural heritage in the
broadest sense, from online and remote cultural access to onsite visit,
from individuals to groups, from tangible to virtual and robotic mediation.

The fast development of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and
Mixed Reality (MR) solutions over the last few years are transforming how
people interact, work, and communicate. The eXtended Reality (XR) term
encloses all those immersive technologies that can shift the boundaries
between digital and physical worlds to realize the metaverse. According to
tech companies and venture capitalists, the metaverse will be a
super-platform that convenes sub-platforms: social media, online video
games, and ease-of-life apps, all accessible through the same digital space
and sharing the same digital economy. Inside the metaverse, virtual worlds
will allow avatars to carry out all human endeavours, including creation,
display, entertainment, social, and trading. Thus, the metaverse will
evolve how users interact with brands, intellectual properties, health
services, cultural heritage, and each other things on the Internet. A user
could join friends to play a multiplayer game, watch a movie via a
streaming service and then attend a university course precisely the same as
in the real world.
The metaverse development will require new software architecture that will
enable decentralized and collaborative virtual worlds. These self-organized
virtual worlds will be permanent and will require maintenance operations.
In addition, it will be necessary to design an efficient data management
system and prevent privacy violations. Finally, the convergence of physical
reality, virtually enhanced, and an always-on virtual space highlighted the
need to rethink the actual paradigms for visualization, interaction, and
sharing of digital information, moving toward more natural, intuitive,
dynamically customizable, multimodal, and multi-user solutions.
This special session aims to focus on exploring how the realization of the
metaverse can transform certain application domains such us: (i)
healthcare, in which the metaverse solutions can, for instance, improve the
communication between patients and physicians; (ii) cultural heritage, with
potentially more effective solutions for tourism guidance, site
maintenance, and heritage object conservation; and (iii) industry, where to
enable data-driven decision making, smart maintenance, and overall asset
optimisation.

SUBMISSION AND DECISIONS

Authors should prepare an Abstract (1 - 2 pages) that clearly indicates the
originality of the contribution and the relevance of the work. The Abstract
should include the title of the paper, names and affiliations of the
authors, an abstract, keywords, an introduction describing the nature of
the problem, a description of the contribution, the results achieved and
their applicability.
As an alternative to the traditional abstract, it is possible to submit a
Graphical Abstract. For further information, please see here:

When the first review process has been completed, authors receive a
notification of either acceptance or rejection of the submission. If the
abstract has been accepted, the authors can prepare a full paper.
The format for the full paper is identical to the format for the abstract
except for the number of pages: the full paper has a required minimum
length of five (5) pages and a maximum of six (6) pages.
Full Papers will be reviewed by the Technical Program Committee. Authors of
accepted full papers must submit the final paper version according to the
deadline, register for the workshop, and attend to present their papers.
The maximum length for final papers is 6 pages.
All contributions will be peer-reviewed and acceptance will be based on
quality, originality and relevance. Accepted papers will be submitted for
inclusion into IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

Adaptive and personalized systems have become pervasive technologies,
gradually playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives.
Indeed, we are now accustomed to interacting with algorithms that leverage
the power of Language Models (LLMs) to assist us in various scenarios. From
services suggesting music or movies to personal assistants proactively
supporting us in complex decision-making tasks. As these technologies
continue to shape our everyday experiences,
it becomes imperative to ensure that the internal mechanisms guiding these
algorithms are transparent and comprehensible. The EU General Data
Protection Regulation (GDPR) recognizes the users' right to explanation
when confronted with intelligent systems, highlighting the significance of
this aspect.
Regrettably, current research often prioritizes the maximization of
personalization strategy effectiveness, such as recommendation accuracy, at
the expense of model explainability.
To address this concern, the workshop aims to provide a platform for
in-depth discussions on challenges, problems, and innovative research
approaches in the field. The workshop will specifically focus on
investigating the role of transparency and explainability in recent
methodologies for constructing user models and developing personalized and
adaptive systems.
By bringing together researchers and practitioners, the workshop aims to
foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the development of novel
solutions. Through this collective effort, we can advance the understanding

SUBMISSIONS

We encourage the submission of contributions investigating novel
methodologies to exploit heterogeneous personal data and approaches to
build transparent and scrutable user models. In particular, we accept three
kinds of submissions:
(A) Regular papers (max. 14 pages + references - single-column ACM format)
(B) Ongoing projects, Demo and Short papers (max. 7 pages + references -
single-column ACM format);

During the submission process select “6th Workshop on Explainable User
Models and Personalized Systems (ExUM)”
All submitted papers will be evaluated by at least two members of the
program committee, based on originality, significance, relevance, and
technical quality. Note that the references do not count toward page
limits. Submissions should be single-blinded, i.e. authors’ names should be
included in the submissions. Papers must be formatted according to the new
workflow for ACM publications.
All accepted papers will be published by ACM as a joint volume of Extended
UMAP 2024 Proceedings and will be available via the ACM Digital Library. At
least one author of each accepted paper must register for the particular
workshop and present the paper there.

The selected researcher will advance Human-AI collaboration in medical
decision-making. Key tasks include:

Developing Explainable AI (XAI): Innovate in XAI and Uncertainty
Quantification for clinical decision support systems (CDSS).

Designing Human-AI Protocols: Implement and test protocols that
enhance decision-making and trust in AI processes.

Empirical Analysis: Conduct experiments and data analysis to evaluate
AI system effectiveness and decision-making impact.

Academic Outreach: Publish findings in scientific venues, attend
conferences, and engage in interdisciplinary collaboration.

Teamwork: Work with a diverse team, integrating insights from
clinicians, computer scientists, biomedical engineers and psychologists.
The postdoc will also supervise PhD students, master degree students, and

This role demands strong AI and HCI expertise, ideally with a focus

*Admission Criteria*
To participate in the call, a master degree in Computer Science (LM-18 ),
or Computer Engineering (LM-32 ), or Statistical Science (LM-82 ), or
Techniques and methods for the information society (LM-91), or Biomedical
engineering (LM-21 ), or Cognitive science (LM-55), or Philosophical
Sciences (LM78) or equivalent foreign degree, is required. A PhD is not
required, but recommended. Previous background in AI and HCI is also highly
recommended.
*About the Laboratory*
The MUDILAB at UNIMIB mainly focuses on the development and evaluation of
decision support systems and eXplainable AI - human interaction protocols.
Currently, the lab has two faculty members, three funded PhD students and
two post-doc.
The founders, the head Prof. Federico Cabitza and Prof. Davide Ciucci, have
both been counted among the world's top 2% of researchers in AI and medical
informatics for years, according to the list curated by Stanford
researchers.
The MUDI group has a recent track record of previous publications in
prestigious venues (CHI, Interact, AAAI, ECAI, …) and research projects on
both fundamental and application-oriented research, in collaborations with
several hospitals and academic partners.
The BMI lab at UNIPV has a long tradition (dating back to the mid 80s, with
its founder Prof. Mario Stefanelli) of research in biomedical informatics
and AI in medicine. Led by prof. Silvana Quaglini, the lab is the biggest
in Italy in its field and counts 7 faculty, 2 post-docs, and 5 PhD students
(enrolled either in the Biomedical Informatics PhD @UNIPV or in the
National PhD in AI - health&life sciences pillar).
Both groups aim to provide its members a friendly environment with strong
supervision, in which individuals can grow and let their full potential
flourish. We regularly organize group meetings and gatherings outside the
lab to keep the team motivated and encourage a good work culture.
